Resin Casting Bases 2015

Post by Sammy » Tue Jun 16, 2015 6:03 pm

For those of you new to the community, we have done several series of custom resin cast bases in the past and made these available at a reasonable cost. Please sound off on this thread if you have an interest in purchasing any of these custom base designs for your army this year. This is a labor of love with low/non-existent profit margins, so it's been about a year since these have last been offered. If there is enough interest and it is economically feasible, I will look into doing a 2015 order run.

Please note that due to the materials costs, I'm not going to do a casting run on anything this year unless people want multiple Chadds worth of bases. Chadds are a unit of measurement relative to the base's size. There are small/medium/large Chadds that equal 10/5/3 bases respectively. So for example 2 small Chadds of bases and 3 medium Chadds of bases would equal 20 small bases and 15 medium bases.

Resin Bases photo reference thread (includes most molds)

How much do they cost?
With very few exceptions, bases prices are as noted:
1 small Chadd - 7
1 medium Chadd - 6
1 large Chadd - 5

Please respond to this thread or PM me with specific questions. If there is enough interest, I will look into doing a 2015 run of bases for the community.

FAQ
These seem way cheaper than the standard price for resin bases on the market.
Ok, that's not really a question. But yes, these bases are priced considerably less than comparative products currently on the market.

Are the base sizes exactly the same as official PP bases?
Pretty much. The RTV silicone used to make the molds and the resin used for casting has negligible shrinkage. Careful removal of excess flashing should give you a correctly sized base within a rational human being's tolerance. Keep in mind that PP has released "official" bases with varying tolerances over the year. The take away is that there is little practical difference in a tape measure game with a 30mm base and a 29.92-29.999mm base. You can test this yourself using batches of official PP bases that span multiple years and precision digital calipers.

*Update* the manufacturers specs detail shrinkage on the RTV silicone at .8%-1.2%. on a 30mm base, that would translate to a possible loss of .24mm-.36mm. Digital calipers and an inspection by an artisan may be able to note those differences, but it should be within acceptable gameplay tolerances. I'm going to conservatively say that even the best players are going to demonstrate higher levels of variance with their tape measuring on the table.

Flashing? The bases don't come ready to go?
They might, but there might also be some mold flashing which will need to be trimmed.

Is resin dangerous?
No, unless you're sanding it into a powder and inhaling it. Resin is toxic so you don't want to breath in the particulates, but it is absolutely safe to touch in solid form. To remove flash, a sharp razor blade is recommended. You will need to take additional precautions for sanding.

There's no slot on the resin base, how do I get my models in the base?
You will need to pin the model to the base. This involves drilling hole(s) in the model's foot or other structure, hole(s) in the base surface, and attaching it with a wire pin and glue.

Are you serious about the Chadd measurement system?
Yes.

Why can't I just order 1 base?
If you really just need 1 large base, I can probably accommodate that order, PM me and we'll work it out. The point is, since these are custom cast to order with basically no profit margin, I have little incentive to do small runs of the bases week over week. It's one thing if you want 1 large base for the year, it's another thing if you want 1 large base in June, then 8 small bases in July, then 2 medium bases in August...

How are the bases cast?
The bases are cast in gravity fed RTV silicone molds. They are not cast using a pressure pot, but air bubbles are manually coaxed out to get optimal casts.

Will there be air bubbles in the casts?
There may be some air bubbles, but I work hard to minimize unacceptable defects. There are a lot of casts that I end up chucking into the QC no-pass box.

Why don't you have a store front?
This is not a business, this is a service for our community in order to enhance the beauty and aesthetic appeal of armies on the table. If this were a business, the production quality would be enhanced further (pressure/vacuum cast setup, larger production runs, inventory management, etc), and the pricing would be adjusted to match.

Who designed these bases?
These bases are collaboratively designed by myself, ColonelCurry, and Dangerhawk from these forums. Credit also goes to Raymond for sculpting the Cog Collective flag and objective markers. You will not find these designs anywhere else, unless someone has deemed us worthy enough to steal from.

I also have a few extra sets of these scatter terrain designs that I made for the club. Here's a link on the hobby blog that I was writing before home improvement projects trumped fun this year. If anyone is interested in a set for their personal tables, I have bare version of the sets (3 total, one of each of the designs) available for 10 dollars.

I'd like to get 8 Chadds of small city, 3 large city and one medium city. What sort of time would you need to complete? I also live in Salem with limited access to transportation, would you ship at my expense? Are there any ways to arrange payment outside of cash? Thanks for your time, glad to see you have time for bars again.

I'll be determining orders and yields soon, if you haven't already spoken with me or locked in a request, let me know by next Monday.

If I've talked to you already, your orders are either being worked on or scheduled. People in Salem won't get anything until July (Duck has to transport them back south).

Quick updates, some of the molds are reaching the end of their life cycles so I will be retiring the following designs:

Trenches
50mm Huge Rock design

I have enough casts to fill current requests, but cannot accept any new ones on these. I will likely need to retire a few more of the molds after this run.

In the future I may look into converting the existing designs into base inserts, so anal-retentive gamers only have to worry about the variance in PP's own products and not fractional dimensions which may be lost as part of the mold making process. This would require additional time and resources, so I would only do it if the community wanted to crowd fund that venture, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

1 small chad of swamp

I don't know how this works but I am willing to follow whatever procedures necessary.

If you are going to make them I also would take:

1 small chadd of swamp bases.
2 medium chadds of swamp bases.
AKA Sneak, Dagna, Jesse

If it's not too late, I'll take the following in RUINS:

Large Chadds: 2
Medium Chadds: 3
Small Chadds: 10

I think that's 70+18+10=$98

I can pre-pay if you need.
